preface — Marc, Institutiones Morales
Explanation of the Manner in Which the Testimonies of St. Alphonsus Are Indicated
There is no one who does not know that St. Alphonsus wrote various moral works. Let those things be compared which we indicate at the end of the second volume. In our edition, it pleases us especially to cite two moral works of the Holy Doctor, namely the Moral Theology and the golden book whose title is: Homo Apostolicus. The testimonies of the Moral Theology are brought forward without indication of the work itself; only the numbers of the work are noted, with the volume and page of Father Gaude's edition sometimes added. As regards the book Homo Apostolicus, it is indicated briefly by the initial letters: H. Ap., with the treatise and number added. Therefore the indication: I, 24; V, 4; H. Ap., III, 33, is to be read thus: St. Alphonsus, Theol. mor., book I, n. 24; book V, n. 4; H. Ap., treatise III, n. 33. If the following occur to you: I, 81; ed. G., I, p. 60, read: St. Alphonsus, Theol. mor., book I, n. 81; Gaude edition, vol. I, p. 60. The other moral works of St. Alphonsus are sufficiently indicated; for example: Exam. ordin. (Examen ordinandorum); Conf. dir. (Il Confessore diretto); Praxis (Praxis confessarii).
