Article V. On the Oath
436. Preliminary. Among the ways of worshiping God there is also the invocation of the divine name. The divine name is invoked in three ways: 1. by way of an oath, for confirming the speaker's own words; 2. by way of adjuration, for inducing others to do or omit something; 3. by way of invocation, for praying and especially for praising God. In this article we treat of the invocation of the divine name through an oath; in the following article, however, adjuration and the invocation of the divine name will be treated. But concerning prayer enough has already been said above.
This article is divided into four paragraphs: 1. on the notion and division of an oath; 2. on the lawfulness of an oath and its requisite conditions; 3. on the obligation of an oath; 4. on the violation of an oath, or perjury.
