Treatise I. On The Sacraments In General

¶8.

Literature. On this extensive matter very many authors, both ancient and modern, have written, of whom we cite only a few, but the principal ones, namely: St. Thomas, S. theol. 3, q. 60-65; St. Alphonsus, Theol. mor. l. 6, n. 1-94; Drouven, O.Pr., who learnedly composed two large volumes on sacramental matters (2nd ed., Venice 1756); Christian Pesch, Praelectiones dogmaticae, vol. VI; August Lehmkuhl, Theol. mor.

We divide the treatise on the sacraments in general into six chapters: 1. on the essence and existence of the sacraments; 2. on the number and division of the sacraments; 3. on the efficacy and effects of the sacraments; 4. on the institutor of the sacraments; 5. on the minister of the sacraments; 6. on the subject of the sacraments. At the end of the treatise, by way of an appendix, we shall treat the sacramentals.
