Chapter III. On charity toward neighbor

¶87.

From what was said above, n. 554, it is established that charity toward neighbor is not another virtue than charity toward God, because the same formal object by which is present. "For the reason of loving neighbor is God; for this is what we ought to love in neighbor, that he be in God. Hence it is manifest that the act by which God is loved and the act by which neighbor is loved are the same in species. And on account of this the habit of charity extends itself not only to the dilection of God, but also to the dilection of neighbor."1

We divide this whole chapter into three articles: 1. on the existence, extension, and order of the precept of charity toward neighbor; 2. on the works of charity; 3. on the sins opposed to this charity.
