Chapter III. On the Liturgical Requisites for Celebrating

¶39.

Preliminary note. Since enough has already been said above, n. 191 ff., concerning those things which by divine law are required for the valid and licit celebration of Mass, such as the priestly order, the state of grace, attention, intention, etc., it remains to say a few things concerning the requisites from ecclesiastical liturgical law, and indeed not insofar as these prescriptions are to be fulfilled physically, since this pertains to the liturgy, but insofar as their transgression constitutes a more or less grave sin. By ecclesiastical law four things are required for licitly celebrating Mass, namely: 1. a legitimate time; 2. a becoming place; 3. sacred furnishings; 4. rites to be observed. Enough has already been said above, n. 198 ff., concerning the Eucharistic fast.
