Treatise — Prümmer, Manuale Theologiae Moralis
Treatise VI. On Ecclesiastical Penalties
Preliminary note. Although the discipline concerning ecclesiastical penalties properly pertains to Canon Law, nevertheless it is found in almost all modern Manuals of Moral Theology, because it is very necessary in the practice of the confessor. Therefore we too here explain ecclesiastical penalties very briefly, as a complement to the treatise on penance and for the benefit of confessors; but we omit vindicative penalties (for example, degradation and deposition) and penances, both because such penalties are very rare today and because this matter pertains solely to Canon Law. The whole treatise is divided into three chapters: 1. on ecclesiastical penalties in general; 2. on censures in general; 3. on censures in particular.
