Article Five. On Ordinary Reserved Excommunications
¶1.
The third series from the constitution Apostolicae sedis contains three excommunications, to which a fourth was added from the decree Vigilanti of Leo XIII, May 25, 1893. These censures, since they are reserved by the Roman pontiff, are properly to be called papal; nevertheless bishops can absolve from them by force of power delegated to them by ordinary law.1
1 The Sacred Congregation of Propaganda, on August 18, 1893, extended also to the faithful of the Eastern rite the censure established by the decree Vigilanti.
