Question — Noldin, Summa of Moral Theology
Question First. On the nature of penance.
¶1.
Penance is taken in two ways, as it is a virtue and as it is a sacrament. The virtue of penance is a part of the sacrament of penance, namely the act of the penitent (sorrow for sins), which is necessary for validly receiving the sacrament; and from this part the sacrament takes its name.
