Book Second. On Acts Apt For The End

¶1.

Man must tend to the ultimate supernatural end by his acts: for eternal beatitude is repaid to us as wages and reward of labor. Now, in order that our acts may be apt for meriting the ultimate supernatural end, they must be human, morally good, supernatural, and meritorious: for the end cannot be obtained except by acts which are proportioned to the end; but only these acts are proportioned to the ultimate supernatural end. Therefore we must treat in order of human acts, of moral, supernatural, and meritorious acts.
