Question Fourth. On the remission of sins.

Since the sacrament of penance was instituted for producing the remission of sins ex opere operato, it must be treated briefly, so that those things which below must be said concerning this sacrament may be declared more clearly. From these things at the same time the way is known by which the sinner can recover sanctifying grace lost through sin.
