Appendix. On Indulgences
(St. Thomas, Supplement, q. 25-27; St. Alphonsus, Theologia Moralis, book VI, n. 531-538; Homo Apostolicus, treatise 16, n. 62-72).
The sacrament of Penance was instituted by Christ the Lord for remitting both guilt and eternal and temporal punishment due for sins committed. It happens, however, that not every temporal punishment is remitted through the sacrament. Now the punishment surviving can be remitted both through other sacraments, and through good works - since in each there is a satisfactory value - and through indulgences. Hence the dissertation on indulgences is suitably attached to the treatise on the Sacrament of Penance, inasmuch as it is ordered to the integral remission of sins.
We shall speak first of indulgences generally, then of some indulgences in particular.
