Section II. On the Way of the Cross and on the Crucifix of the Way of the Cross

514.

The Way of the Cross is: "A pious exercise by which the whole series of the Lord's passion, expressed in painted tablets where this can conveniently be done and distributed into several stations, is proposed for contemplation in the manner in which pilgrims visiting the City of holy Jerusalem look upon the very places where Christ suffered, recalling and frequenting them."1

We shall speak first of the erection of the Way of the Cross, then of the indulgences attached to it and of acquiring them, and then of the Crucifix of the Way of the Cross.

1 Constitution of Benedict XIII Inter plurima, March 9, 1726.
