Dissertation III. On Penalties Established for Individual Delicts

¶1.

I note beforehand canon 6, n. 5: As regards penalties of which no mention is made in the Code, whether they are spiritual or temporal, medicinal or, as they say, vindicative, latae or ferendae sententiae, they are to be held as abrogated.

With these things noted, we shall speak chiefly of medicinal penalties, or censures, and of those latae sententiae; the others come less into use for confessors. Therefore one must treat first of excommunications, then of interdicts, finally of suspensions.
