Chapter — Wouters, Manual of Moral Theology
Chapter IV. On the Cessation of a Vow
651.
A vow can cease both through intrinsic causes and through an extrinsic cause, that is, through an authority intervening. Cessation which occurs through intrinsic causes is customarily called simple cessation. But authority can intervene through irritation, suspension, dispensation, and commutation (can. 1311). We shall speak of each.
