Dissertation I. On Extreme Unction Considered in Itself

563.

Extreme Unction can be defined: the sacrament by which a sick person, through an anointing with blessed oil and the prayer of the priest, is relieved according to the soul, and, if it is expedient for the soul, also, at least sometimes, according to the body (cf. St. Thomas, In IV Sent., dist. 23, q. 1, a. 1, 2, 3, 4; q. 2, 1 and 2; St. Alphonsus, VI, 706). It is also called simply anointing, or the anointing of the sick, the sacrament of those departing, etc.

With this definition given, we shall treat first of the existence, then of the essence, then of the effects, and finally of the necessity of Extreme Unction.
