Dissertation II. On the Cultivation of Hope
¶1.
(St. Thomas, II-II, qq. 20-21; St. Alphonsus, Theologia moralis, II, 20-21; Homo Apostolicus, tr. 4, nn. 6-8.)
511.
Hope is a supernatural theological virtue inclining man to expect, with certain confidence, through the help of God, eternal beatitude and the means necessary for attaining it (St. Alphonsus, Homo Apostolicus, tr. 4, n. 6).
The primary material object is beatitude; the secondary material object is all the means which conduce to beatitude (De virtutibus, p. 402).
The formal object or motive of hope is divine help, or the assisting power of God.
These things recalled to memory, we shall speak first about the necessity of the act of hope, then about sins against hope.
