¶1.
(St. Thomas, II-II, q. 60, a. 3; qq. 72-73; St. Alphonsus, Theologia Moralis, book III, nn. 962-1003; Homo Apostolicus, tract 11, nn. 1-2 and 7-22.)
Reputation, from speaking, is the common opinion or estimation of many concerning the morals of another. It is called good or bad according as morally good or morally bad things are adjudged to someone. Speech pertains to the perfection of reputation. Reputation is injured externally through detraction, internally through rash judgments. Each must be discussed.
