Treatise IV. On the Most Holy Eucharist
(St. Thomas, III, qq. 73-83; St. Alphonsus, Theologia Moralis, book VI, nn. 189-424; Homo Apostolicus, tract 15).1
The Most Holy Eucharist is not only a sacrament, but also a sacrifice. Now the foundation of the whole doctrine on this matter is the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Hence we shall speak first about the real presence of the Lord in the Eucharist, then about the Most Holy Eucharist as it is a sacrament, finally about the Most Holy Eucharist as it is a sacrifice. These three things are set forth in these words of canon 801: In the Most Holy Eucharist, under the species of bread and wine, Christ the Lord is contained, offered, and received.
