§ V. On the Office of Consulting for Amendment of Life
402.
After hearing confession, the confessor "will lead the penitent to amending and better ordering his life, and will hand down remedies for sins."1 Hence he should inquire into the causes of sins, especially whether there was some occasion, and assign remedies. The general means are: 1. flight from occasions; 2. prayer, especially devotion toward the Blessed Virgin Mary; 3. frequency of the sacraments; 4. spiritual exercises instituted in some house of exercises. As regards particular means, compare what is to be said about the ministration of the sacrament to some persons specifically.
