causa — Decretum of Gratian
Causa XIX
GRATIAN. Two clerics wish to pass to a monastery; each sought permission from his bishop. One, having left his own church against the bishop’s will, betook himself there; the other, having left a regular canonry, betook himself to a monastery. (Question I.) It is now asked whether a bishop ought to permit a cleric to enter a monastery after leaving his own church. (Question II.) Second, it is asked whether, if the bishop is unwilling to give permission, the cleric can go to a monastery against his will. (Question III.) Third, if it happened that they were regular canons, whether entrance into a monastery was to be conceded to them.
GRATIANUS. Duo clerici ad monasterium transire uolunt; uterque licentiam ab episcopo suo petiit; unus relicta propria ecclesia eo inuito, alter dimissa regulari canonica cenobio se contulit. (Qu. I.) Modo queritur, si episcopus debeat permittere, ut relicta propria ecclesia clericus monasterium ingrediatur? (Qu. II.) Secundo queritur, si episcopus licentiam dare noluerit, an eo inuito monasterium possit adire? (Qu. III.) Tertio, si contigerit ipsos regulares canonicos fuisse, utrum concedendus esset eis monasterii ingressus?
