causa — Decretum of Gratian
Causa VII
GRATIAN. A certain bishop, weighed down by a long illness, asked that another be substituted for him; the Supreme Pontiff assented to his prayers and granted him what he had asked. But afterward that same bishop recovered, and he desires that what he had previously done be rescinded; he raises a question against the one who had joined him and reclaims his chair as though it were owed to him. (Qu. I.) Here it is first asked whether, while a bishop is living, another can be ordained in the same church. (Qu. II.) Second, whether this man can reclaim the chair which another received through his intercession.
GRATIANUS. Quidam longa inualetudine grauatus episcopus alium sibi substitui rogauit, cuius precibus summus Pontifex annuit, et quod rogauerat ei concessit. Postea uero conualuit idem episcopus, et quod prius fecerat cupit rescindi; aduersus eum, qui sibi accesserat, questionem mouet, suam cathedram tamquam sibi debitam reposcit. (Qu. I.) Hic primum queritur, utrum uiuente episcopo alius possit in ecclesia eadem ordinari? (Qu. II.) Secundo, an iste ualeat reposcere cathedram, quam sua intercessione alter accepit?
