¶.

GRATIAN. Two persons in the years of childhood were handed over to a monastery by their parents; one unwillingly, the other voluntarily, put on the cowl. When they reached the years of puberty, the unwilling one returned to secular military service, while the voluntary one sought a stricter monastery. (Question I.) Now it is first asked whether those handed over in the years of childhood are compelled to maintain the purpose of religion. (Question II.) Second, if anyone in childhood receives the tonsure or the garment of religion apart from the will of the parents, whether it can be taken from him or not. (Question III.) Third, whether one who put on the cowl apart from his own will is compelled to retain it or not. (Question IV.) Fourth, whether anyone is permitted to pass from one monastery to another that is stricter.
