causa — Decretum of Gratian
Causa XXI
GRATIAN. The archpriest of a certain church accepted the provostship of another and is unwilling to relinquish the former; he also becomes an agent for secular business. Adorning himself in bright and shining garments, he is corrected by his bishop; after abandoning his office, he has recourse to a secular judge. (Question I.) It is asked whether a cleric can be enrolled in two churches. (Question II.) Second, if he wishes to relinquish one, whether it is lawful for him to pass to the other. (Question III.) Third, whether clerics are permitted to undertake agencies for secular business. (Question IV.) Fourth, whether it is expedient for them to be adorned with bright and shining garments. (Question V.) Fifth, whether, when corrected by the bishop, they are able to abandon their office and have recourse to a secular judge.
