Question — Bontempi, Palladium Theologicum V · from Schola Thomistica
Question LII: How, and when, the precept of the love of the neighbor binds
We explained above the manner: to love one's neighbour as oneself, not equally, but similarly. First on the side of the end, in order to God. Second on the side of the object and the rule of good love. Third on the side of the reason for loving, that he love him for the good of the neighbour, as the reason of friendship requires.
The time, however, is how often we are bound to do good, and when it would be necessary for avoiding sins against the neighbour, especially hatred, etc. See Valentia, puncto 2.
Tempus vero est, quoties tenemur benefacere, et quando necesse esset ad vitanda peccata in proximum, maxime odii, etc. Vide Valentiam puncto 2.
I append here a charming doubt. The desires of death of those from whom inheritances are expected are usually insinuated. These, indeed, are mortal, says Navarr. man. c. 15. num. 10., and he cites all, because the life of the neighbour is a good higher than riches. But others say it is not necessary to repel them, but that they are licit: so Bassaeus, V. char. num. 23., citing Sa, V. Charitas, num. 8.; Azor p. p. lib. 3. cap. 12. quaestio 2.; Sancius select. disp. 2. num. 9.; Palaus part. 1. tract. 6. de char. disp. 4. part. 1. num. 11.: "so that you do not cooperate in death." Bassaeus proves it, because only a useful good is desired; but death, if God wills it: yet these things are frivolous, and therefore to be passed over.
Appono hic lepidum dubium. Solent desideria mortis eorum, a quibus expectantur haereditates, insinuari. Haec sane esse mortifera, ait Navar. man. c. 15. num. 10. et omnes allegat, quia vita proximi est bonum altius divitiis. Enim vero alii dicunt non esse necesse ea pellere, sed licita esse, ita Bassaeus V. char. num. 23. adducens Sa V. Charitas, num. 8. Azor p. p. lib. 3. cap. 12. quaestio 2. Sancium select. disp. 2. num. 9. Palaum part. 1. tract. 6. de char. disp. 4. part. 1. num. 11. modo non coopereris morti. Probat Bassaeus; quia solum cupitur bonum utile; mors vero, si Deus velit : Sed haec frivola sunt, ideo praetermittenda.
