Question VII: Whether the seventh beatitude corresponds to the gift of wisdom
ST. AUGUSTINE, in the book On the Sermon on the Mount, distributing the gifts among the beatitudes, says: Wisdom befits the peacemakers, in whom there is no rebellious motion, but one obeying reason.
An septima Beatitudo respondeat dono Sapientiae.
THEREFORE Wisdom corresponds to this seventh beatitude: Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called the children of God: The reason, St. Bonaventure, part 5 of the Breviloquium, chapter 6, is; because Wisdom joins us to the supreme and true good, in which is the end and tranquillity of our whole rational appetite; once this peace is attained, there necessarily follows a superabundant spiritual delight, which is contained in the twelve fruits of the Spirit.
IGITUR Sapientia respondet huic septimae beatitudini: Beati pacifici; quoniam filii Dei vocabuntur: Ratio D. Bonav. 5. p. Breviloq. cap.
WHY, however, Wisdom is ordered to peace, St. Thomas also explains, question 45, article 6; for peace is the tranquillity of order, as St. Augustine says, book 19 On the city of God; but to order belongs to Wisdom, as Aristotle teaches at the beginning of the Metaphysics, and therefore to be a peacemaker is attributed to Wisdom.
