Disputation II: On the Vices Opposed to the Virtue of Temperance

English · Latin · Both

1.

NOW concerning the opposite Vices of Temperance there must be a treatise, which are many and most shameful; for the more spiritual and exalted a Virtue is, the worse are the vices by which it is assailed, and as it were fixed in mire. Corresponding to the three integral parts of Temperance, namely Abstinence, Sobriety, and Chastity, there are three adverse vices, Gluttony, Drunkenness, and Lust: Of the first and second we shall treat in the two following questions; the third, however, since it is divided into several species, I shall weigh through more doubts. Gluttony the holy Doctor describes most beautifully in Diaeta, titulo 2. cap. 8., where he unfolds it with apt comparisons; see him there.
