Section I: On Piety

English · Latin · Both

1.

VIRTUES which are joined by some kindred bond often lend one another their names; hence Piety is often taken for mercy, or that compassion by which we are moved toward others, and conversely; hence also that affection by which certain Brute animals nourish their young with such solicitude passes into a semblance of piety, as some call it. It will not be beside the point, therefore, to inquire what Piety truly is, in how many ways it is taken, and what kind of virtue it is.
