Disputation XXXIII: On Contumely
Hitherto I have discussed the various ways in which the neighbor is wounded in the goods of the body, and by which the injurer is bound to repair the damage inflicted; now I shall treat of some things which pertain to damage to the soul, reputation, or honor; among which contumely first presents itself, whose nature, after I have described it, I shall then explain how a Christian man ought rather to bear it than to return it.
De Contumelia.
Hactenus varios discussi modos, quibus proximus in bonis corporis laeditur, quibusque iniurians tenetur damnum illatum resarcire: iam aliqua disseram, quae ad damnum animae, famae, vel honoris spectant; inter quae primo occurrit contumelia, cuius naturam postquam descripsero; dicam quomodo homo Christianus debeat eam potius ferre, quam referre.
