Sole Subquestion: On Fasting

English · Latin · Both

1.

Heretics, whose God is the belly, so hunger after gluttony that not only do they abolish every precept of fasting, but moreover fasten upon it the charge of superstition; thus, being carnally wise, after they have lost all sense of Chastity and modesty, they beslaver themselves with the delicacies of foods, and, captivated in their eyes, they cannot see the clearest testimonies of sacred Scripture, which extol the merit of fasting; because they will not.

2.

FIRST of all the Aëtians gave origin to this error, who in the time of the Fasts fed themselves on sumptuous dishes in contempt of the precept; Jovinian followed these, as Bonerius reports from St. Jerome, and St. Augustine in 2. exam. de fidei unitate; then the Manichaeans, Waldenses, and Lollards followed at divers times, and transmitted their heresies, though so often cooked, nevertheless raw, to the most recent sectaries, whom I shall recall and refute in dubitatione 3.
