Disputation XII: On Sloth
SINCE Charity, after the manner of fire, always acts, and is impatient of idleness, hence, the material of operating being furnished to it by the readiness of the one operating, it rejoices in great gladness; but when the will slackens from the good work, sadness is born; hence Acedia is opposed to the Joy of Charity, as D. Bonav. notes, prima parte Centiloq. sect. 21. Therefore it must be treated of here.
CUM charitas, ad instar ignis, semper agat, sitque otii impatiens, hinc, subministrata ipsi operandi materia ab operantis promptitudine, in magnam hilarescit laetitiam; verum pigrescente a bono opere voluntate, tristitia enascitur, hinc Gaudio Charitatis opponitur Acedia, ut notat D. Bonav. prima parte Centiloq. sect. 21. Ideo de ea agendum est hic.
