Question II: Whether joy is a virtue

English · Latin · BothHide topicsShow topics

1.

That it is NOT a virtue, D. Thomas shows in the cited article, from the enumeration of the parts.

2.

It is PROVED from S. Thom., because Joy is not an operative habit, but is an act toward which the habit inclines, which is called Charity. For the same habit inclines to loving, to desiring the beloved, and to rejoicing in him; and therefore the habit of Joy is not distinct from the habit of Charity, because every virtue rejoices in exercising its acts, as D. Bonaventure teaches, 3. dist. 26. quaest. 2. ad 4.; but it agrees especially with Charity, which has for its object the good, insofar as the good delights through the habit.
